On May 4th, special education students from Amador, Tuolumne and Calaveras County came together for a fun-filled day of a variety of games and activities. The Challenger Games is an official school-sanctioned all-day event.

Junior and senior Bret Harte U.S. History students learn firsthand the experiences of those who have served our Nation. Veterans and servicemen share their stories, bringing history alive for the students.

The Calaveras County Board of Education unanimously voted at last night’s regularly scheduled board meeting to approve Karen Vail as the new Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools. She will complete the remainder of Scott Nanik’ s term starting July 1, 2022. Vail is running unopposed in the upcoming election, that 4-year term will begin on January 1, 2023.

Each year, the Motherlode Charter of the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) recognizes classified school staff who have gone above and beyond their job duties. These individuals have shown tremendous dedication to the students and their schools. Congratulations to this year’s awardees.

Calaveras County Public Health is open for services to the community again. These services include Tuberculosis Tests, Pregnancy Tests, Flu vaccines, and Childhood Immunizations. See Eligibility Requirements.

A new pilot program in Calaveras county is teaching students Hands-Only CPR. This is made possible through a collaboration of partnering agencies within Calaveras and Tuolumne county. Students are being taken through a video guided course, with the assistance of Grey Taylor, Captain of the Petaluma Fire Department.

The 37th Annual Calaveras County Virtual Science Fair was a success on a number of levels. This was the very first year that students were contending for the cash prize of $250 that was awarded to each of the four category winners.

Every Student Succeeding (ESS) is a program to honor students who have risen through challenges and adversity to succeed and shine in their academic journey.

Local high school students from all either public, private or home schools are invited to participate each year in the Poetry Out Loud competition presented by the Calaveras Arts Council with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Poetry Foundation and the California Arts Council.

Residents of Calaveras County may be surprised to learn that Albert Michelson, the first American scientist awarded the Nobel Prize, lived in Murphys, CA as a child. A plaque marks the location of his childhood home on Main Street.
