On Saturday, Jan. 22, students from all over Calaveras County competed in the 3rd Annual Battle of the Books. Student teams collectively read 20 books and flexed their knowledge of those books’ content during 3 rounds of competition and one bonus round.

January 2022 is the 20th Annual National Mentoring Month, and this year Calaveras Mentoring is celebrating with expanded community outreach and an annual fund drive.

Calaveras County Superintendents sent a letter regarding the vaccine mandate to Governor Gavin Newsome on Nov. 19, 2021. The response that was received has left us optimistic about the direction that the state is taking on the vaccine mandate for students.

Club Live chapter at Mark Twain Elementary has chosen to focus on Anti-Vape Awareness. Using the creative campaign slogan, “You’ll need your lungs in the long run,” the students of Club Live led an Anti-Vape Awareness Jog-O-Thon during lunch on December 16, 2021. Students provided informative flyers and anti-vape bracelets, pens and stickers. After participating students completed four laps around the school track, they were awarded an event t-shirt designed by Club Live members.

A project called “I Matter” at two local schools is helping students feel valued, build a sense of connection with each other and to the community, and highlight individual worth. This first-time project has had a positive impact on students, staff and family members as they view all the faces on display.

On Nov. 18, 2021 students and teachers from Calaveras and Amador County schools mingled with scientists at the Dinner With a Scientist student event put on by the Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE).

Calaveras County Superintendents are submitting a joint letter regarding the vaccine mandate and want to encourage parents and families to contact their representatives. Representatives can be located at https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/.

The Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE) has available for public bid one 1999 (1) Dodge Van. The highest bid will be honored and van will be sold “AS IS” with no warranty or guarantee.

Each year Calaveras County Health and Human Service Agency (HHSA) and Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE) collaborate on innovative ways to utilize grant money aimed to help youth transition into adulthood while increasing safety and connection with community resources.

The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program that provides a temporary discount on monthly broadband bills for qualifying low-income households.
