The Calaveras Health and Human Services Agency/Behavioral Health Services Division (CHHSA) and Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE) have been awarded a competitive four-year, $2.5 million Mental Health Services Act grant to support student mental health in local elementary schools.

The California Department of Public Health (CDHP) and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) allocated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at no cost to schools.

After 23 years of providing preventive dental services and oral health education to children of Calaveras County, the program is coming to an end. Due to the Covid-19 situation, the program was forced to end abruptly. Dental services provided have included dental screenings, cleanings, fluoride applications, and dental sealants at no charge to students.

Teachers and school staff abruptly entered the world of virtual teaching this March. The Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE) stepped up to give teachers and staff immediate help to navigate distance learning during the Stay at Home order.

Nicotine addiction is a significant issue among youth in Calaveras County. While other forms of nicotine use have declined in recent years, vaping has gone way up.

Ten years ago, Phillips was recommended by an elementary school teacher as someone who may benefit from having a mentor in their life, and the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program (CYMP) paired her with Olson, a former recreational therapist, local realtor and mother of two grown boys.

Local resident and current Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE) Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) member, Christy Miro, has been appointed to serve on the California State Student Attendance Review Board. Miro has been a member of the Calaveras County SARB for the past six years.
