There was a recent scare for Calaveras county residents that involved an unauthorized solicitation for tech equipment and donations for local students. The attempt was cunningly crafted and appealed to county residents wanting to support students challenged by distance learning.

The Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE) and the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) honored outstanding classified school employees in Calaveras and Amador County.

Today the Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools Scott Nanik coordinated a conference call with Calaveras County School District Superintendents and the Calaveras County Public Health.

Avery Middle School student, Preston Porrazzo, won this year’s “Tell Us Your True Teen Story” contest. Students submit a short essay about a passion they have, a struggle they’ve faced or something that makes them special.

Reese Roeder, a 6th grader from Christian Family Learning Center, won the Grand Prize. Reese’s project, “Can Salt Save” earned her a certificate, a traveling trophy that will be on display at her school, and a place at the 2020 California State Science & Engineering Fair.

Seventeen years ago, Donna Shannon met Tina Miller. The pair, aged 60 and 11 at the time, respectively, were the first match ever made in the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program (CYMP).

One act of Kindness can ripple through a community as it does during Kindness Week in Calaveras County. Blue ribbons adorn businesses and schools, “Practice Random Acts of Kindness” pass-it-on ribbons are pinned to shirts all over the county.

Calaveras County students in the Friday Night Live (FNL) Mentoring program hosted the 13th Annual HOLLA Awards, which stands for Honoring Our Local Leaders and Administrators, on Tuesday, February 5 at Bret Harte High School and Wednesday, February 6 at Calaveras High School.

The Calaveras County Office of Education has brought a new student event, Battle of the Books. Over 30 students, from 4 Calaveras county schools, competed at the event.

January is National Mentoring Month, and Calaveras Mentoring is celebrating this annual effort to expand quality mentoring opportunities for young people with proclamations, posters, banners and an information session for potential volunteer mentors.

Research shows that mentors play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to strive and thrive, to attend and engage in school, and to reduce or avoid risky behavior.
